Seattle, WA—A study was done earlier this year by the Oregon State Lottery Commission to determine the impact of their video lottery machines on jobs. They looked at three different types of establishments that had video lottery machines. They found that “those that offered video lottery games for 50 or more weeks in 2002 had fewer employees per establishment than those that did not offer lottery games during the year.”
The three types of establishments they looked at were bars and taverns, full service restaurants, and limited services restaurants that served alcohol.
They found that the “average wage paid per employee is less for video lottery establishments that are bars and taverns or full service restaurants.” Limited service restaurants paid a somewhat higher wage but they attributed this to the fact that they serve alcohol and didn’t employ minors or as many part time workers.
Using regression analysis the study found that the “presence of VLT’s had a negative, not positive, relationship to the number of workers in bars and taverns, and in limited service restaurants.”
While limited service restaurants with VLT’s paid somewhat higher wages (($12,338 to $10,466 per year) this was more than offset by their having an average of only 9.3 workers versus 18.5 workers.
Initiative 892 would drastically increase gambling in Washington State by adding over 18,000 slot machines to over 2000 neighborhood restaurants , bowling alleys and bars all across Washington state.
